Biosecurity at work – a state-wide webinar
15 November 2019
Farmers are invited to hear about ways they can safeguard their farms from pests and diseases and help to protect their industry at a free webinar being held this month.
Agriculture Victoria, through its BetterBeef and BestWool/BestLamb Networks, is hosting a state-wide webinar / phone seminar titled ‘Biosecurity at Work’.
This event will feature a first-hand account of the 2001 foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak in the United Kingdom from Agriculture Victoria District Veterinary Officer, Dr Jeff Cave.
Dr Cave will give a personal account of his direct involvement in the outbreak and highlight some pertinent lessons.
The UK FMD outbreak was at it’s height when Dr Cave arrived in Cumbria – the most severely affected part of the country.
During the outbreak roughly six per cent of the total livestock population of the UK was destroyed, billions of pounds were lost from the economy, and the UK’s ability to export livestock was halted for over 12 months.
“No doubt the lives of people in the affected communities were changed forever,” Dr Cave said.
To compliment his first-hand account, the seminar will include a panel session, featuring a number of producers who will give short presentations on how biosecurity enhances their businesses and practical ways that they enforce biosecurity in their operations.
