Grains Innovation Park Open Day to celebrate 50 years

Grains Innovation Park (GIP) will celebrate 50 years of agricultural research and innovation in the Wimmera by opening its doors to the public on Thursday, 18 October.
Farmers, industry representatives and community members are invited to see firsthand the world-class research happening right here in the Wimmera.
There are over 150 staff employed across a range of agencies at GIP, delivering services focused on supporting the agriculture sector and land management.
Of these, there are over 100 Agriculture Victoria research, extension, biosecurity and animal health staff who are working at a regional, national and international level, to grow and protect agricultural production.
GIP is also home to the Department of Land, Water and Planning, including Forest Fire Management Victoria and the Horsham Incident Control Centre, which is activated during emergencies. The Victorian Fisheries Authority, Parks Victoria and Regional Development Victoria are also at the site.
From 11am visitors are invited to tour the facilities and learn more about the diverse work carried out at GIP.
A range of guided tours will be held throughout the day including tours of:
- The Australian Grains Genebank and Plant Phonemics Victoria facilities
- Australia’s best equipped grains chemistry laboratories
- The ‘Heritage Crops Demonstration’, showcasing 50 years of crop improvement
- Forest Fire Management Victoria’s new firefighting tankers and Australia’s first firefighting simulation table
- The Horsham Incident Control Centre used to manage emergencies throughout the Grampians.
There will also be static displays showcasing the Victorian Fisheries Authority, animal health and biosecurity services and information, Regional Development Victoria, agronomic research, the latest ‘smart farms’ technology and more.
The Grains Innovation Park Open Day will run from 11am to 6pm on Thursday, 18 October. Guided tours will be available until 5pm.
A barbecue lunch and refreshments will be available for sale from the Rotary Club of Horsham East.
