Aquatic animal welfare
Commercial fishing capture guidelines
Animal welfare guidelines to assist the Australian commercial fishing have been developed under the Australian Animal Welfare Strategy (AAWS). It is expected that the majority of commercial fishing operations meet these guidelines in their existing day-to-day operations.
The guidelines released apply to vertebrate fish species and were developed by the Aquatic Animal Welfare Working Group established within the AAWS. This covers commercial and recreational fishing sectors, the aquaculture sector, ornamental fish sector and the animal welfare sector from across Australia.
The guidelines can be viewed on the official Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC) website.
Humane killing of fish
Either a firm knock on the head or spiking of the brain (called iki jime - pronounced "iki jimi") will kill fish immediately. These are the two preferred killing methods endorsed by Australia's National Code of Practice for Recreational and Sport Fishing.
The iki-jime method of brain destruction is recognised as the most humane method of killing finfish. The Australian Animal Welfare Strategy funded development of the following website to promote best practice in the humane dispatch of finfish caught by recreational anglers. It provides information by video demonstration, description of suitable tools and advice on techniques to humanely kill fish.
Aquatic animal welfare guidelines
The National Aquaculture Council of Australia in consultation with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry published guidelines on welfare of fish and crustaceans in aquaculture and/or in live holding systems for human consumption which can be viewed on the South Australian government DECD website under the heading Aquatic Animal Welfare Guidelines.
