The dairy sector is a very important industry for Victoria.
There are more than 4,200 dairy farms in Victoria spread across three dairy regions - north, south-west and Gippsland. There are some 10,600 people employed in dairy production and a further 9,300 people employed in dairy processing in Victoria. The Dairy Industry Profile or provides an overview of the location, structure and performance of Victoria's dairy industry.
Gross value of milk produced in Victoria was $3.1 billion in 2014-15. Victoria accounts for approximately 80 per cent of Australia's dairy product exports, worth around $2.3 billion in 2014-15. This strong export focus means returns to Victorian dairy farmers are strongly connected to world dairy commodity prices and exchange rates.
The department aims to enable a sustainable and productive dairy farming community through leadership, practice change and innovation. We work collaboratively with the dairy industry to help it remain competitive in the global export market. We also focus on helping the industry with adapting to climate variability, biosecurity and emergency management.
