Victoria's dairy industry is mature, well resourced, well organised and internationally competitive.
Victoria has more than 4,000 licensed dairy farms spread across the three dairy regions of the north, south west and Gippsland. In 2013-14, there were 1.1 million dairy cows in Victoria, accounting for two thirds of the national dairy herd.
Victoria accounts for approximately 85 per cent of Australia's dairy product exports, worth around $2.3 billion in 2013-14 (an increase from $1.87 billion in 2012-13). This strong export focus means returns to Victorian dairy farmers are strongly connected to world dairy commodity prices and exchange rates.
Export successes are driven by the industry's efficient, pasture-based dairy farms, the availability of grain as a cost-effective feed supplement and a progressive and efficient processing sector that researches and develops products to suit customer needs.
We aim to enable a sustainable and productive dairy farming community through leadership, practice change and innovation.
We work collaboratively with the dairy industry to help it remain competitive in the global export market. We can provide you with a range of services that will help you in the ongoing management and growth or your business.
We also help the industry with adapting to climate variability, and with biosecurity and emergency management. Our work also helps to ensure the health and welfare of your animals, and manage your pastures, water, effluent and soils.
