In the coming weeks and months, the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) will visit dairy farms in the Towong Upper and Biggara region. These visits are in response to community reports regarding the quality of water in the upper Murray River.
The EPA will be inspecting dairy effluent systems with a focus on effluent management, infrastructure and irrigation areas.
Dairy effluent should not enter ground water or leave the farm boundary. Washing fertiliser into creeks and rivers reduces oxygen levels in the water, ultimately affecting aquatic life and potentially creating algal blooms, which can be toxic to livestock and humans.
For more information on dairy effluent management visit www.epa.vic.gov.au or www.depi.vic.gov.au. The Management of dairy effluent-2008 DairyGains Victorian Guidelines can be found on the Dairying for Tomorrow website, www.dairyingfortomorrow.com.au.
For further information on the upcoming inspections please contact Rachel Wiggins, telephone 1300 EPA VIC (1300 372 842).
