Mildura
DEDJTR Mildura is a leader
in agricultural research, both nationally and internationally. The centre contributes to Victorian agriculture's productivity, profitability and sustainability through its work in issues such as pest and disease management, irrigation and deficit irrigation management, horticultural agronomy, precision
viticulture and whole farm planning.
The facility was established in the 1950s and has gradually grown, culminating in a $10 million building that opened in 2003. The site currently houses some 170 staff, including research staff and business and support personnel.
Historically,
DEDJTR Mildura has an important role in citrus, dried grape, table grape and wine grape research, and has significantly contributed to the establishment and success of these industries in Victoria.
Research has recently expanded into agronomy in almond research, whilst at the same time targeting
specific quality areas of wine grape production including anthocyanins (pigments) and tannins in grapes and wine.
DEDJTR researchers are world leaders in smoke taint and tannin research and Mildura has now been established as a 'Centre for Expertise' in smoke taint research.
Work will focus on the impact smoke from bushfires and controlled burning has on grapes and wine.
