Australian Pig Industry Quality Assurance Program
APIQ™ stands for the Australian Pork Industry Quality Assurance Program.
The advantages of implementing APIQ™ in your piggery are:
- You will be able to sell your pigs to domestic and export markets that require pigs sourced from farms with an approved quality assurance (QA) program. There is a QA declaration on the PigPass NVD (PPNVD) that you must complete when pigs leave your property and/or when selling pigs.
- It allows you to demonstrate to your customers that you follow acceptable standards for management, food safety, biosecurity, traceability and animal welfare. You will be able to demonstrate that you are complying with state and federal law on food safety, biosecurity, traceability and animal welfare
- Taxation deductibility ¡V the costs associated with implementing, managing and auditing QA on your farm are legitimate business-related expenses and are therefore eligible for tax-offsets.
- Improved management of your pigs and in your piggery
For small-holder producers (those who have 20 sows or less or who market 400 pigs or less in a year), there is a simple and easy-to-operate program, using a diary and pocket notebook, has been developed to enable them to meet the APIQ® standards.
For large-holders, the program has been made user-friendly by simplifying the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point procedures.
How can we help?
Staff at our Pig Health and Research Unit can assist pig producers to understand and implement the Australian Pork Industry Quality Program (APIQ®) on their farms.
Individual producers who are thinking about starting APIQ® on their farms, or who are making the transition from PigPass QA to APIQ® can get assistance on getting started or information on how to update APIQ®.
APIQ® workshops are held at our offices with small groups of producers on an as-needs basis. These allow producers the opportunity to discuss any issues with APIQ® implementation.
