Rain and Grain – Soil Moisture Monitoring Summary - December 2016
Author: Dale Boyd
Published: 18 Jan 2017
Rain was variable across the state in November and the Bureau of Meteorology monthly rainfall map indicates less than 25 millimetres of rain across most of the Wimmera and Mallee. More rain in the other cropping regions has made for challenging hay making season across Victoria, a slow start to harvesting with rain interruptions once the crop was ready to harvest.
The Bureau of Meteorology Landscape Water Balance Map for root zone moisture (5 January 2017) shows most cropping districts are average to above average for soil moisture for this time of year, although parts of Gippsland, the Barwon region and Ouyen/Swan Hill region have below average soil moisture levels now. High yielding crops in the Mallee and Wimmera have used large amounts of water filling grain. Crops that were water logged in early Spring have suffered yield impacts and more residual moisture remains in these paddocks.
