Rain and soil moisture monitoring observations August 2017

Recent rain and SMM observations:
Rainfall in August was generally above average, with large parts
of the state exceeding 50 millimetres and some areas receiving in excess of 100
millimetres. There were some parts of the state that had between 25-50
millimetres of rain and Gippsland and the Milawa were some of those
regions.
Soil moisture peaked in cropping paddocks on 21 August. All monitoring sites had a range of improvements in soil moisture during August (some being minor), but those with significant increases are highlighted with a red arrow in the speedo section. As listed in the previous SMM summary, it is always a positive sign to see soil moisture improving in August as crop biomass develops.Below is an example of what some of 14 speedos are showing us, for more information and to find a SMM site near you, email dale.boyd@ecodev.vic.gov.au and subscribe to our newsletter.
