Agricultural losses from bushfires

Fires across Victoria this month have had a significant impact on agricultural properties.

Agriculture Victoria teams have been calling and visiting landholders to assist with urgent animal welfare needs and to assess agriculture losses.

Agricultural losses below are correct as of 2 pm on 15 January.

Please note, figures will change as more information is confirmed from landholders impacted. Figures should be therefore interpreted as partial figures, rather than estimates of total impact.

Confirmed livestock losses from fires in the North East (Cobram, Dargo, Longwood and Walwa) include:

  • Beef cattle – 1,071
  • Sheep – 21,448
  • Goats – 15
  • Pigs – 1
  • Horses – 7
  • Poultry – 53
  • Some bee hives

Other agriculture losses in the North East include:

  • Farm area affected – 34,397 ha
  • Fencing impact – 2,684 km
  • Machinery, woolsheds and haysheds – 100
  • Vehicles and machinery – 184
  • Stored grain – 1 tonne
  • Hay silage – 19,546 t
  • Grazing pasture – 19,572
  • Plantation hardwood – 2,010 ha
  • Wine grapes – 39 ha
  • Apple/pear – 2 ha
  • Summerfruit – 1 ha
  • Citrus – 1 ha
  • Berries – 1 ha
  • Olives – 8 ha

Confirmed livestock losses from fires in the West (Boinka, Colignan, Combined Carlisle River fires and Grass Flat) include:

  • Beef cattle – 30
  • Sheep – 1,101
  • Goats – 24
  • Horses – 2
  • Poultry – 1

Other agricultural losses in the West include:

  • Farm area affected – 5,691 ha
  • Fencing impacts – 83 km
  • Machinery, woolsheds, haysheds – 11
  • Vehicles and machinery – 15
  • Hay and silage – 391 t
  • Grazing pasture – 1,238 ha
  • Plantation hardwood – 42 ha
  • Wine grapes – 4 ha
  • Apple/pear – 2 ha
  • Olives – 1 ha
