25 years of genomics driving smarter farming worldwide

Victoria is marking 25 years since a landmark international study co-authored by Victorian scientists helped establish genomic selection as a powerful tool used around the world to improve how farmers breed healthier animals and grow better crops.
Agriculture Victoria Head Agriculture Science and Technology Simone Warner said the 2001 research provided the foundations for a method that has changed how breeders make decisions.
'This work has shaped breeding programs around the world, delivering industry benefits since 2016, with even greater gains projected according to DataGene analysis, and reflects the long-term contribution of Victorian scientists to global agricultural research.
'Genomic selection allows farmers and breeders to use DNA to predict performance and make decisions earlier.'
'Instead of waiting years to see results in the field, they can identify the best genetics at the start, reducing time and improving confidence on farm,' she said.
'The technology is now widely used across all major livestock and cropping industries, with Victorian scientists continuing to develop new tools and making them even more accessible to farmers.'
'It has helped increase the rate of genetic improvement and supports progress in key traits such as fertility, feed efficiency and disease resistance.'
'These gains demonstrate how long-term investment in science and technology has translated into improved productivity and profitability at the farm gate,' Professor Warner said.
She said through Agriculture Victoria’s industry and research partnerships around the world, our scientists are leading work that is shaping the next generation of genomic selection.
'We are combining genomics with things such as artificial intelligence, big data, sensors and drones to improve accuracy and speed.'
'These tools will help more farmers and breeders make more informed decisions into the future.'
'These benefits flow through to the broader economy, strengthening Victoria’s food and fibre sector and export competitiveness,' Professor Warner said.
