H5 bird flu update: first detection in fluttering shearwater

New positive detections of H5 bird flu have been confirmed in Victoria in the past couple of days as the virus continues to move through wild bird populations. No detections have yet been found in poultry or other animals.

There are 11 new positive detections of H5 bird flu. Detections were primarily along the south-west coast (in Warrnambool, near Apollo Bay and at Port Fairy), with one at Christmas Hill. Terns accounted for most of the new detections, with two silver gulls and a fluttering shearwater also identified. The total current number of positive detections statewide is 71 from 50 investigations.

Chief Biodiversity Officer James Todd says detections in new species and at new locations are not unexpected.

“Although these new identifications are difficult news, we are seeing what we would expect in terms of a growing impact among wild bird populations.

“We are anticipating further impacts and are working with communities to prepare.”

Several webinars and community activities have been hosted across the state in key locations over recent weeks, with more being planned as the response to H5 bird flu continues to evolve.
