Industry meets for Wimmera Pulse Field Day

4 October 2023

Growers and agronomists are encouraged to attend the Southern Pulse Agronomy Wimmera Pulse Field Day at Dooen on Thursday 19 October to learn about the latest in lentil, chickpea, field pea, faba bean and vetch research.

Agriculture Victoria Senior Research Agronomist Jason Brand said that with a drier spring forecast he is expecting growers will have a different set of questions for researchers and industry experts.

Mr Brand said attendees will be able to interact face-to-face with experts from agronomy, pathology, breeding, marketing, and trading and make informed decisions for this year’s crop and beyond.

‘The Wimmera Pulse Field Day provides a great opportunity to gain information on new practices to optimise pulse production which can be applied on-farm.’

Mr Brand said this includes management options and strategies for weeds and diseases.

‘People can see first-hand the results of our pulse agronomy trials which demonstrate a combination of management strategies and varieties for weed and disease control, plus the performance of soon to be released varieties, new findings relating to storage of pulses and much more.

‘Breeding updates will be provided by lentil, field pea, chickpea and faba bean breeders including upcoming variety releases and priority traits in the breeding pipeline,’ he said.

Expert updates on marketing trends (local to global exports) will be provided by guest traders including AGT Food. Farming System Researchers, Jeremy Whish and Fernanda Dreccer from CSIRO will also provide an update on a national pulse agronomy project.

The day will finish with a complimentary barbecue lunch featuring the legendary chickpea burgers. This will provide an opportunity to catch up and share knowledge with industry professionals and others.

The site is located on Banyena Road, Jung, 3 kilometres east of Henty Highway, north of Dooen.
