Malathion (Maldison) Removed From ICA-20 Treatment Options

Agriculture Victoria advises that malathion (Maldison) is no longer an approved treatment option under ICA-20 (Pre-Harvest Treatment and Inspection of Table Grapes). This change applies to both cover spray and bait spray treatments and reflects updated national regulatory requirements for malathion products.

The removal of malathion follows label changes by the registrant to remove the chemical for use on grapevines. The associated label changes have resulted in malathion no longer meeting the requirements for interstate market access under ICA-20.

What This Means For ICA-20 Accredited Businesses

• Malathion (Maldison) products can no longer be used under ICA-20 certification for interstate trade.
• Accredited businesses should review their pest management programs and avoid purchasing or applying malathion (Maldison) products for ICA-20 compliance in the coming season.
• Accredited businesses should ensure staff are aware of the change before commencing certification activities.

• Accredited businesses may use other approved chemicals listed in the Victorian ICA-20 Operational Procedure, version 3.4, to meet relevant interstate entry conditions.

Alternative Chemical Options

Agriculture Victoria accepts the remaining chemical treatments listed in the Victorian ICA-20 Operational Procedure (Naturalure® Fruit Fly Bait Concentrate, trichlorfon, and clothianidin) and is working with interstate trading partners and industry stakeholders to identify additional chemical treatment options that may support continued interstate market access. Relevant trade protocols will be developed or updated once new options are available.
