Tomato brown rugose fruit virus detected in Victoria
Current situation – detection in Victoria, updated 19 February 2025
Tomato brown rugose virus (ToBRFV) has been detected at a glasshouse tomato facility in northern Victoria. Agriculture Victoria is continuing to respond to the detection.
The facility is temporarily closed and remains under quarantine. This is to stop the highly contagious plant virus from spreading.
The virus was detected in tomato seedlings moved from South Australia in December 2024.
The entire property is now under biosecurity control. This stops the movement of host material until eradication is finished.
This detection is linked to a specific movement of plant material. There is no evidence of ToBRFV in any other part of Victoria.
Agriculture Victoria is assisting with the safe removal and disposal of plant materials, and decontamination of the premises. We will coordinate diagnostic testing to get the business back into operation as soon as possible.
Eradication and decontamination are key to protecting Australia's $5.8 billion vegetable industry and the $2.8 billion plant nursery industry from the impacts of the virus. This plan is in line with the national response agreed on with industry input.
