Future ready agriculture: A research and innovation strategy to empower the Victorian agriculture industry 2026–2030

Victoria’s agriculture sector is one of the state’s most important economic drivers, supporting regional communities, exports and food and fibre production. As the sector faces increasing pressure from climate variability, evolving biosecurity risks, changing markets and emerging technologies, research and innovation will play a critical role in maintaining productivity, resilience and competitiveness.

Future ready agriculture: A research and innovation strategy 2026–30 sets the long-term direction for Agriculture Victoria’s research and innovation effort. The strategy provides a framework for government-led agricultural science and technology, ensuring public investment delivers practical outcomes for Victoria's agriculture sector and the broader community.

The strategy’s vision is to create a sustainable and prosperous agriculture industry for Victoria, empowered by science and technology. It focuses on 4 priority areas: productivity and profitability; climate mitigation and adaptation; biosecurity, pests and diseases; and sustainable growth and resource efficiency. Delivery is supported by world-class facilities and technology, exceptional people and capabilities, and strong strategic partnerships.

Creating impact for Victorian agriculture

Agriculture Victoria plays a critical stewardship role in Victoria’s agricultural innovation system. Through research, diagnostics, partnerships and translation pathways, Agriculture Victoria helps strengthen productivity and profitability, build resilience to climate and market challenges, protect the sector from biosecurity threats, maintain sovereign capability, support evidence-based decision-making and drive economic growth and regional prosperity.

How the strategy was developed

The strategy was developed as part of Agriculture Victoria’s 2025 Research and Innovation Review. It was informed by targeted engagement with government agencies, industry bodies and Research and Development Corporations, research organisations and universities, and farmer representatives. The strategy also aligns with broader Victorian Government priorities and national science, climate and biosecurity frameworks.
