Wildlife, fish and declared pest animals – additional permits and requirements

The use and keeping of animals in Victoria is overseen by a number of government agencies.

If animals are used for scientific procedures or bred as specified animals, you may need to meet additional requirements, such as a scientific licence and/or animal ethics approval, to the authorisations described below.

Wildlife research permits

Wildlife research permits are required for the use of wildlife for research or teaching.

Fisheries permits and authorisations

A permit and or other authorisation under the Fisheries Act 1995 may be required when fish are used in Victoria for the purpose of research.

Pest animal permits

Pest animal research or education permits are required for the keeping and/or the release of a declared pest animal species.
